Serving Lord Senthilvel’s Hungry Devotees

Muttu Irulaayi Ammaiyar carries on in the footsteps of her guru.
Muttu Irulaayi Ammaiyar carries on in the footsteps of her guru.

Muttu Irulayi Ammaiyar of Manamadurai is a exceptionally dedicated adiyar of Lord Senthil Andavar and Goddess Mari Amman. She met her guru, a Brahmin employed as a cook in his native Ramanathapuram, twenty years ago at Tiruchendur. With sheer determination, her guru would collect donations so he could cook and serve annadanam to hundreds of poor devotees at Tiruchendur during Kanda Sasti.

Along with a growing band of devotees who serve hundreds of devotees daily tiffin, lunch, and dinner, Muttu Irulayi Ammaiyar and her followers, who are all from humble backgrounds, serve the poorest and humblest of Lord Senthil Andavar’s devotees annually at Tiruchendur. Yet despite months of fund-raising annually, they find it more and more difficult to find the funds needed to purchase rice, vegetables, oil, and other provisions needed to serve so many devotees.

With her guru’s blessings, Muttu Irulaayi Ammaiyar has been continuing the service after her guru, and has been doing annadanam on every sasti of the month, and the four big celebrations of ten days in Maasi, Vaigasi, Aavani and Kanda Sasti. This is approximately 60 days of annadanam in a year.

Muttu Irulaayi Ammaiyar and her team are all from humble backgrounds, serve the poorest and humblest of Lord Senthil Andavar’s devotees annually at Tiruchendur, over the past 45 years. In earlier years, Ammaiyar along with a band of devotees would serve hundreds of devotees daily tiffin, lunch, and dinner at the temple vicinity, where they would serve food on banana leaves. Time has brought about many changes and challenges. Despite this, she has continued on in her mission to serve Murugan’s devotees with dedication and bhakti as a tapas.

Muttu Irulayi Ammaiyar continues to organize and direct annadanams. She and her volunteers offer annadanams year-round at various temples to Murugan. But only at Kanta Sasti time do they collect dry rice and vegetables and other sattvic food items to offer annadanam at Tiruchendur Devasthanam.

Many of the devotees may only take one meal per day during sasti and festivals . They typically break the fast with annadanam. It is a blessing for us to participate in this annadanam, both as a receiver and a donor/supporter.

Rupees 125- (~US$ 1.50) covers one sumptuous vegetarian meal inclusive of packaging etc. For US$ 75.00 only, you can feed 50 devotees. The team cooks for 250- 500 devotees per day.

Muttu Irulāyi Ammaiyar and her devotees serve unpaid as bhaktars, so your donation brings the maximum value for the minimum cost. However, they do need to pay the service providers such as those who deliver gas cylinders, vegetables etc.

The team needs support in all forms from Muruga bhaktas. This can be in the form of funds, or materials, or even help with your physical presence. You can contact Ammaiyar at +91 9943189909.
